Editor’s Intro – Shoot To Live

by Justin Somers

Who am I?

What am I doing with my life?

These are the questions that keep us awake at night. The boys at SMN have been struggling with a serious mid-life crisis. Since our teens we have been hell bent on chaos and excitement. Somewhere along the way we lost track of time. We were suddenly hit with the realization that we are 35, and still alive. How the hell did that happen?

– Like so many other young artists of our time, our plan was to get rich and famous, die young, and leave a good looking corpse. But we didn’t get rich, famous, or die young, so now what? What do we do with the rest of our lives?

– For an artist, Shoot to Live means do what you need to do to keep the dream alive, even if it means taking that shitty gig you don’t want, picking up a trade, or serving tables to pay the bills. Maybe it means you have to shake hands with people you don’t like, or make apologies even if you feel you are the one who should be apologiezed to. But, if it’s the difference between turning your dreams into a reality or starving, take the blame and move on.

Make every shot count, and every pose perfect. Make every album your best album. Play every show like it’s your last show. At 35 it’s too late to go back to your parent’s basement to regroup. For some, it’s too late to start a family and have any hope of that happy home. For others, we don’t have homes to go back to. Home is on the road, or in the roar of a live audience. Home is on the other side of the lense, in the smell of fresh paint, or in the feel of pen on paper.

For some of us, the show must go one. We don’t have anywhere else to go. Home is in the pages of this Magazine, and our family is all our friends and fellow artists who stand by us and help breath life into this publication, our publication.

Welcome back, we missed you.

Aim for Life, Shoot to Live
